The UNICEF aims to serve the children around the world by improving children's health and nutrition needs, providing clear water and needed healthcare services, providing the basic education to all regardless boys or girls as well as protecting them from violence, exploitation, AIDS and other dangerous conditions.
"What is UNICEF?" August 9th, the junior journalists took this question and visited the UNICEF China Office.
When we were entering the main hall, we saw the symbol of UNICEF: a child in the world holed by an adult. The Information Officer of the UNICEF China Office Ms. Liu Li led us to the meeting room and introduced a little bit about the office in China and the current status. Ten minutes later, the Chief Representative of UNICEF to China Mrs. Gillian Mellsop came into the room. We all felt that she is like a very kind mother and she uses her motherly love to serve all children.
Mrs Mellsop firstly welcomed us to the office. She said: "As a United Nation's organization and an interna tional authority on children related issues, the UNICEF extensively cooperates with Chinese government and developed many exemplary programs and models to providing necessary services to the most vulnerable groups of children who live in remote and poor areas in China. We mostly concerned about their living conditions because of lack of resources."
Mrs. Mellsop was the UNICEF Chief Representative in Nepal and the Pacific island countries. She joint the UNICEF in 2003. Before that, she was working at Australian International Development Department and New Zealand Foreign Affairs Ministry. She has a bachelor's degree in Anthropology and History from Auckland University and a master's degree in Development Management from National University of Australia. She feel extremely excited to work in China and serve more children.
Kang Chenyang asked: "Good morning, Mrs. Mellsop! I'm a junior journalist from Xi'an city. I want to know how the UNICEF is helping Chinese children?"
Mrs. Mellsop: "This is a good question. We provide much
assistance from the UNICEF, such as healthcare, education, ADIS protection. For example, in Qinghai province, the children there suffer malnutrition; some of them are threaten by improper intellectual development. Therefore, we invented a kind of food addition, called "Nutrition Package" and provided them to all children in Qinghai for free. Those packages can be mixed with regular food and provide necessary nutrition to fight with diseases. UNICEF will bring the good experience to China and help out more children in need."
When answering how the junior journalists can help the children living in poverty in other countries, Mrs. Mellsop said that the internet is an excellent communication platform to connect with those unfortunate kids. China is currently making great efforts to build more schools in Africa and help the local kids to go to school. UNICEF also has an education department, whose key focus is to utilize the internet to build close connections between the children in rural areas and urban cities.
Junior journalists asked many questions during the interview. At the end of the visit, all delegation members made donations to the UNICEF Fund to help more children in need through this wonderful UN organization. Mrs. Mellsop was very happy and awarded the certificates to each junior journaslits.
