The Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste is an island nation located at the eastern end of the Nusa Tenggara archipelago, comprising the district of Oecussi on the north coast of the eastern and western parts of the island of Timor, as well as the nearby islands of Atauro and Jako at the eastern end. It shares the border with West Timor, Indonesia and Australia. At the invitation of President Xi Jinping of the People's Republic of China, President José Ramos-Horta of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste paid a state visit to China from July 28 to 31, 2024.

On the afternoon of January 23rd, "Witness Friendship" – Home and Abroad News Press Junior Journalist Delegation was invited to interview Ambassador of Timor-Leste to China, H.E. Ambassador Loro Horta is a veteran diplomat, a graduate of China National Defense University, and his father, José Ramos Horta, is the current President of Timor-Leste. He was only 16 years old when he first came to China in 1994, and his impression of China was greatly changed over time.

A junior journalist asked: Hello Ambassador, onOctober 5th, 2024, the Confucius Institute at the Timor-Leste Business School organized the opening ceremony of the Chinese language class of the Timor-Leste Defense Force. Many senior officers such as Deputy Chief, Army Commander, Navy Commander, etc. enrolled in the program. 41 officers and soldiers took 5 different levels of language and culture programs atthe Confucius Institute, which shows the strong interestin learning Chinese language and the great importance attached to the friendly relations between the two countries.In your opinions,howwill the Confucius Institutes become an important bridge for cooperation and exchanges between China and Timor-Leste? 奥尔塔大使表示，2019年共新设27所孔子学院，东帝汶是第8个国家设立的孔子学院。东帝汶孔子学院位于东帝汶首都帝力，是东帝汶第一家非营利性中文教育机构，2022年6月正式揭牌，随着中国国力的增强，东帝汶越来越多的学者注重对中国学的研究，汉语教育在东帝汶受到了越来越多的重视。孔子学院旨在促进东帝汶人民对中国语言文化的了解，推动两国教育合作和人文交流。
Ambassador Loro Horta said that a total of 27 new Confucius Institutes will be established in 2019, and Timor-Leste is the eighth country to establish a Confucius Institute. Located in Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste, the Confucius Institute in Timor-Leste is the first non-profit Chinese language education institution in Timor-Leste, which will be officially opened in June 2022.With the raising China's national power, more and more scholars in Timor-Leste are focusing on the study of Chinese studies, and Chinese language education is receiving more and more attention in Timor-Leste. 奥尔塔大使表示，近年来，中国与东帝汶双方经贸关系保持平稳健康发展，各领域务实合作取得了积极成效。中国交付的环保装备涵盖压缩式垃圾车、钩臂车、扫路车、洒水车、勾臂箱等，全面投入使用后将有效提升东帝汶首都帝力市的环保作业水平与质量，不断提升综合服务能力，助力全球环保项目开展，为东帝汶绿色环保的城市运营做出贡献。
Ambassador Loro Horta said that in recent years, China and Timor-Leste have maintained stable and healthy economic and trade relations, and practical cooperation in various fields has achieved positive results. China's delivery of environmental protection equipment covers compressed garbage trucks, hook arm trucks, road sweepers, sprinklers, hook box and such fully operational will effectively enhance the level and quality of environmental protection operations in Timor-Leste's capital city of Dili, and continue to enhance the comprehensive service capacity, help global environmental protection projects, and make contributions to the green urban development in Timor-Leste.

At the end of the interview, Ambassador Horta gave Timor-Leste souvenirgifts to each junior journalist and prepared fruits and drinks for everyone. Ambassador Horta also signed the scenic painting of Sanjiang County displayed by the junior journalist Yang Hanyan. They exchanged views with Timor-Leste Counselor of Education, Counselor of Culture, and Defense Diplomatic Officers who were present at the meeting. The junior journalists have become the friendly ambassadors of the relations between China and Timor-Leste and made their own contributions to the relations between the two countries. When Ambassador Horta and the junior journalists took a group photo, everyone waved the national flags of the two countries and cheered: long live the friendship between China and Timor-Leste!
