To learn about a country, one must first grasp its defining features. Our junior journalists first know about Slovakia because its athletes consistently excel at the Winter Olympics, ranking among the top medal-winning nations in Central Europe. According to official statistics from the International Olympic Committee, prior to the 2024 Paris Olympics, Slovakia had earned a total of 19 Winter Olympic medals (5 gold, 8 silver, 6 bronze), primarily in biathlon, cross-country skiing, and ice hockey. On February 18th, during the men's ice hockey quarterfinals at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy, the Slovakian team defeated Germany 6-2. Notably, on the one-year countdown to the Beijing Winter Olympics in February 2021, Slovak athletes published an open letter in international media expressing support for the Beijing Games. Petra stated in the letter: “The Beijing Winter Olympics represent a step back toward a normal world.”

During the interview session, a junior jounalist asked: “Dear Ambassador, you are a senior diplomat with great experiences. 20 days ago, you presented your credentials to President Xi Jinping in Beijing and formally become the Ambassador of Slovakia to China. As the newly appointed Ambassador, how do you intend to contribute your wisdom and efforts to promoting the friendly relations between China and Slovakia? Thank you!”
“Thank you for your question! For young people, the first step is to maintain curiosity. As students, we must seek our goals, believe in ourselves, and strive to achieve them. Youth from both countries need to understand each other's cultures, find resonance through cultural exchange, and commit to the original mission of fostering friendship between China and Sri Lanka. Ambassador Leciak expressed with confidence: “As ambassador, I will vigorously promote cultural exchanges among young people, enabling the youth of both nations to enjoy a brighter future. Let us collaborate to foster better communication between the next generations of our two countries.”
“Hello Ambassador, Slovakia possesses a rich cultural heritage and distinctive artistic traditions. On January 8th, during your visit to the National Centre for the Performing Arts in China, both sides engaged in in-depth and constructive discussions focused on deepening cooperation in the fields of culture and the arts, as well as expanding the scope of people-to-people exchanges. In your opinions, what further opportunities exist for cooperation between China and Slovakia in culture, science and technology sectors? Thank you!”

Another junior journalist asked: “Hello Ambassador, Slovakia's educational quality has gained international recognition. According to the Education at a Glance 2018 OECD report, Slovakian students outperformed the OECD average in mathematics, reading, and science. We want to know if we choose to study in Slovakia in the future, what advices would you give to us? Thank you!”
Ambassador Lajčiak replied that, generally speaking, cooperation between Chinese and Slovak universities is quite extensive. Both sides exchange faculty members for teaching assignments, implement student exchange programs, and carry out projects serving Chinese enterprises in Slovakia. The Silk Road Academy plays a proactive role in promoting talent development, industry-academia-research collaboration, and cultural exchange between China and Slovakia. The OECD report is essentially divided into two parts. First, it involves a systematic evaluation of the education system with distinct grading criteria; Second, it compares the educational quality of universities across different countries. Slovakia implements a ten-year compulsory education system, with the state providing subsidies for boarding and lodging. The education system comprises preschool, primary, secondary, and higher education. Should you choose to study in Slovakia, you must first obtain a visa from our embassy. We will then assist you in developing a higher-level education plan tailored to your needs.

“Hello Ambassador, Slovakia is known as the “Land of Castles” in Europe, renowned for its distinctive castles. Among its most famous landmarks, Spiš Castle ranks among the world's top castle. We are deeply interested in Slovakia's castles, please share your insights on Slovakian castles and tourism. Thank you!” asked by a junior journalist who enjoys travelling the most.
Ambassador Lajčiak answered: “Slovakia is a jewel of Europe, renowned for its rich history, culture, and unique castle heritage. Dubbed the “Land of Castles,” it ranks among the world's countries with the highest number of castles. Slovakia boasts approximately 180 castles, remarkable not only for their sheer number but also for their excellent state of preservation. Many of these ancient structures have stood firm for centuries. Additionally, the country possesses around 1,200 manor houses and towers, showcasing its castle culture and architectural artistry in full splendor. These castles are not merely historical relics; they are also heavens for travelers, offering rich historical narratives and breathtaking natural landscapes.”

After the interview concluded, Ambassador Leciak and Counsellor Ms. Lucia Skvareninova of the Slovak Embassy in China, invited the junior journalists to enjoy refreshments and juice. The junior journalists were delighted and presented the Ambassador with small gifts they had prepared. For a moment, the atmosphere of Slovak-Chinese friendship filled the Slovak Embassy. Everyone gathered for a group photo in front of the flags of the European Union, Slovakia, and China, cheering in unison: “China and Slovakia’s friendship go on forever!”
