Japan is a mysterious nation in the eastern part of the Eurasian continent with remarkable diversity shaped by its unique geography. With four major islands, including Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, along with over 7,200 smaller islands, it is celebrated as the “Land of a Thousand Islands.” It shares maritime borders with neighboring countries including North Korea, South Korea, China, Russia, and the Philippines. When talking about Japan, its rise as a global economic powerhouse is often attributed to its strong emphasis on education, particularly in primary and secondary schooling. On the morning of February 6th, “Witness Friendship”2026 Winter Home and Abroad News Press Junior Journalist Delegation interviewed with the Ambassador of Japan to China H.E. Mr. Kenji Kanasugi who delivered a welcome speech. Japanese Minister-Counselor and Director of the Press and Culture Center Mr. Sonoda Yo accepted the interview with the junior journalists.

In the interview session, a junior journalist asked Minister Mr. Sonoda: “Good afternoon, Minister! Recently, the foreign ministers of Japan and China signed the ‘Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of Japan and the Government of the People's Republic of China on Strengthening Youth Exchanges’. How do you envision young people from both countries contributing their wisdom and efforts to the healthy development of China and Japan’s friendship? Thank you!”

The Minister said: “That's an excellent question! The Memorandum of Cooperation you mentioned was signed between Japan and China in 2018. This memorandum states that increased exchanges among young people from both countries are vital for fostering friendship and mutual understanding, and for making bilateral relations healthier and more stable. Therefore, promoting exchanges between Japanese and Chinese youth is extremely important. Children in Japan and China share many common interests, such as manga, anime, fashion, and delicious food. Moreover, since we both use Chinese characters, communication comes quite naturally. While smartphones and the internet facilitate modern connections, building genuine friendships is best achieved through face-to-face conversations, and shared activities. I hope you will have opportunities to meet and interact with Japanese friends. Your visit to the Embassy today marks the first step in that direction.”

“Hello Minister! Japanese pop music captivates audiences worldwide with its boundless charm and innovative cultural fusion, maintaining global popularity. Japanese vibrant culture has also left a profound impression on us. Could you please share insights about Japan’s culture and tourism? If we want to visit Japan, what season is the best time for travel? Thank you!” asked by another junior journalist.

The Minister explained that for snow enthusiasts, Hokkaido or the Sea of Japan coast are ideal destinations now, offering beautiful snow and excellent skiing resorts. Those seeking warmer weather can head to Okinawa in the far south, where swimming is already possible. He also spoke about his hometown, Kumamoto, known for its warm hot springs and sweet oranges. In spring, the city is blanketed in beautiful cherry blossoms. Summer brings opportunities for swimming at the beach or camping on the Aso Plateau. Autumn brings vibrant foliage alongside fresh mountain produce and seafood. In short, no matter the season or destination in Japan, visitors can enjoy delightful experiences, breathtaking scenery, and delicious cuisine.
The Minister mentioned that both the Japanese government and Japanese universities are making great efforts to welcome international students to Japan. Japanese universities come in many varieties. Some excel in numerous fields, conducting cutting-edge research at the forefront of the world. Others specialize in specific disciplines and are highly renowned. Some maintain close ties with local cities and communities, helping to address nearby issues. Still others offer knowledge directly relevant to careers, such as universities focused on technology, arts, or sports.

The Minister also mentioned that the Cultural Center at the Embassy of Japan offers study abroad consultation services to all students. Dedicated advisors provide expert guidance on topics including university applications and Japanese scholarships. Some Japanese universities even conduct classes entirely in English, making study possible even without Japanese language skills. Most importantly, you must identify your preferred field and major. This clarity will give you clear study direction and purpose in the future.

After the interview, junior journalist Lian Yichen performed a live violin rendition of “Happy Spring”. The spring captured in the music, the resonance within hearts, the profound cultural heritage, and the rich folk customs earned warm applause from the Japanese diplomats. For a moment, the sounds of the violin, laughter, music, praise, and applause filled the Japanese Embassy.
