The Republic of Malta is a highly developed capitalist country located in Southern Europe. As an island nation at the heart of the Mediterranean, Malta is also a member of both the Commonwealth and the European Union. Since establishing diplomatic relations with China, the two countries have consistently upheld mutual respect and trust, maintaining robust bilateral development. Malta looks forward to further strengthening cooperation with China for the benefit of both peoples. China is one of Malta's most important trading partners. On the morning of February 3, 2026, “Witness Friendship”2026 Winter Home and Abroad News Press Junior Journalist Delegation interviewed with the Ambassador of Malta to China H.E. Mr. John Busuttil.
采访会上，小记者一边观看马耳他宣传片，一边聆听白瀚轩大使介绍马耳他。被誉为“地中海明珠”的马耳他共和国，是欧盟的成员国，也是连接欧非的战略枢纽。自1972年中国与马耳他建交以来，中马两国在经贸、文化等多个领域取得了丰硕的合作成果。如今，中马关系已成为不同规模国家友好交往的典范。
In the interview, junior journalists watched a promotional video about Malta while listening to Ambassador John Busuttil introduce the country. Known as the “Pearl of the Mediterranean”, the Republic of Malta is a member state of the European Union and a strategic hub connecting Europe and Africa. Since establishing diplomatic relations in 1972, China and Malta have achieved fruitful cooperation across multiple fields including trade, economy, and culture. Today, China-Malta relations serve as a model for friendly exchanges between nations of differing scales.
大使谈到，马耳他是一个非常美丽的群岛国家，在历史上，所有想要征服地中海的军队和征服者都曾到过马耳他，并在这里留下了他们的历史印记。
The Ambassador noted that Malta is a stunning archipelago nation. Throughout history, every army and conqueror seeking to dominate the Mediterranean has passed through Malta, leaving their historical imprint here.
马耳他还有新鲜的海鲜和甘甜多汁的水果。如果小记者在父母或老师陪伴下有机会到地中海旅行，这里绝对是享受假期的理想之地。
Malta also jas fresh seafood and juicy fruits. If junior journalists have the chance to travel to the Mediterranean with their parents or teachers, this is undoubtedly an ideal destination for enjoying a holiday.
在采访环节，小记者们一一用流利的英语向大使介绍自己：我叫什么？来自哪个城市、哪所学校读书？我喜欢什么？我的特长？每一个小记者表示，希望在成为两国青少年交流的友好使者。
Before the interview questions, the junior journalists introduced themselves to the ambassador in fluent English: What is my name? Which city and school do I come from? What do I like? What are my special talents? Each junior journalist expressed their hope to become a friendship ambassador for youth exchanges between the two countries.
大使说，其实你们踏入马耳他驻华大使馆起就已经离开你们的国家，进入到马耳他国家了。
The ambassador remarked, “Actually, the moment you stepped into the Embassy of Malta in China, you have already left your country and entered the nation of Malta.”
在采访环节，有小记者问：尊敬的大使阁下您好！我们小记者能采访您感到非常高兴，您是一位充出色的外交官，您曾担任马耳他驻欧盟代表团贸易代表、马耳他外交部全球事务司长，2023年1月18日你在北京人民大会堂向习近平主席递交国书，正式成为马耳他国驻华大使。你认为：中马两国青少年，将如何传承中马建交54年来的宝贵友谊？谢谢!
A junior journalist asked: “Hello, Ambassador! We are very happy to have this interview with you today. As an outstanding diplomat, you have served as Malta's Trade Representative to the European Union Delegation and Director of Global Affairs at Malta's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. On January 18, 2023, you formally presented your credentials to President Xi Jinping in Beijing, officially become the Maltese Ambassador to China. In your opinions, how should we, as the youth of China and Malta, carry forward the precious friendship over the past 54 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between our two nations? Thank you!”
“谢谢，首先非常欢迎中外新闻社的小记者们访问马耳他驻华大使馆。马耳他被誉为 ‘欧洲后花园’, 是一个全球唯一的 ‘四位一体’ 国家，集欧洲同盟国、欧元区、申根国、英联邦于一身。现在有很多中国学生在马耳他留学和学习英文，但是马耳他的学生很少在中国留学。这也是我以后工作的重点，希望更多的马耳他学生来中国留学，推动马耳他和中国青少年的交流。”
“Thank you. First of all, I'd like to extend a warm welcome to the Home and Abroad News Press junior journalists for your visit to the Embassy of Malta in China. Malta is often referred to as the “Backyard of Europe.” It is the only country in the world that uniquely combines membership in the European Union, the Eurozone, the Schengen Area, and the Commonwealth of Nations. Many Chinese students currently study in Malta and learn English there, yet very few Maltese students study in China. This will be a key focus of my work going forward to encourage more Maltese students to study in China and promote more exchanges between the youth of both nations.”
有小记者问：您好大使阁下！您是中国人民的好朋友和老朋友，到过中国很多城市，非常喜欢中国的美食，您评价“中国是最上镜的国家”，请您谈谈这句话的涵意？谢谢！
Another junior journalist asked: “Hello, Ambassador! As a dear and longtime friend of the Chinese people, you have visited many cities in China and enjoyed the great taste of Chinese cuisine. You said that ‘China is the most photogenic country.’ Could you please elaborate on the meaning behind your saying? Thank you!”
大使说，当他来中国之前，其实也不怎么拍照，也不怎么去拍别人的照。来到了中国了之后，发现中国到处都很多美景，然后经常去拍照，时间长了，拍照就多了，一看，每一张照片都很美，所以他就觉得“中国是最上镜的国家”。大使建议：我们两个国家可以举行风景摄影大奖赛，中国人去马耳他拍照马耳他风景，马耳他人到中国拍中国的风景，拍照的照片拿出来参加比赛，评比出优秀作品颁奖，这样可以吸引更多的人到对方国旅游。
The ambassador said that before coming to China, he didn't take many photos himself, nor did he often photograph others. After arriving in China, he discovered breathtaking scenery everywhere and began taking photos frequently. Over time, he accumulated a large collection of pictures, each one stunningly beautiful. This led him to conclude that “China is the most photogenic country.” The ambassador proposed: “Our two countries could host a landscape photography competition. Chinese photographers would capture Malta's scenery, while Maltese photographers would take the pictures of China's landscapes. The submitted photos would be judged, with awards given to outstanding works. This initiative could attract more visitors to each other's countries.”
有小记者问：大使阁下您好！马耳他是全球唯一集“欧盟国、申根国、欧元国以及英联邦国家”四个身份于一体的国家，马耳他属于英联邦国家，英联邦国家最普遍的特征就是采用英联邦教育体制，如果我们毕业后选择到马耳他留学，马耳他大使馆可以给我们提供哪些帮助？谢谢！
“Hello Ambassador, Malta is the only country in the world that holds four distinct statuses: an EU member state, a Schengen member, an Eurozone member and a Commonwealth nation. As a Commonwealth country, Malta adopts the Commonwealth education system. If we choose to pursue studies in Malta after graduation, what good advices would you give to us for our future study? The Ambassador stated: As you mentioned, Malta is a Commonwealth nation that remained under British colonial rule for over 160 years. In 1974, the country achieved its full independence. Malta is a member of the European Union and Eurozone, and operates within the Commonwealth framework. All courses are taught in English, making it quite straightforward for many international students to study in Malta. The education system follows the UK and Commonwealth model. Malta maintains flexible educational partnerships with numerous countries. The Embassy of Malta in China provides comprehensive support to Chinese students choosing to study in Malta.
采访结束，小记者们也把自己准备的新年小礼物赠送给白瀚轩大使和其他外交官。一时间，马耳他驻华使馆会议厅祝福声、欢笑声汇聚一堂，合影时大家齐声欢呼：中马友谊万岁……
At the end of the interview, the junior journalists presented the small gifts they prepared to Ambassador Busuttil. At that moment, the conference room of the Maltese Embassy was filled with joy and laughter. When taking a group photo, everyone shouted: the friendship between China and Malta last forever......

Before leaving the embassy, all junior journalists felt that visiting the Maltese embassy was a really enjoyable experience, and the Maltese diplomats really opened our eyes through their well-developed diplomatic temperaments.
