The Ambassador of the Slovak Republic to China H.E. Mr. Dusan Bella said that to transform our world and shift its development onto a sustainable and resilient path, the UN General Assembly adopted in September 2015 the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 targets. This is the Agenda of unprecedented scope and significance, which emphasizes a holistic approach to achieving sustainable development for all. These universal goals and targets involve the entire world, developed and developing countries alike. They are integrated, indivisible and balance the three dimensions of sustainable development: the economic, social and environmental.
He also mentioned that because the COVID-19 pandemic caused the serious impacts in many aspects; therefore, we need to take a swift action to provide food and humanitarian relief to the poorest and most vulnerable people across the world, ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being at all ages is essential to sustainable development.
The Ambassador of the Kingdom of Thailand to China H.E. Mr. Arthayudh Srisamoot said in his speech that on the special occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, we are discussing global sustainable development issues in Shanghai, which is the birthplace of the Chinese Communist Party, this has great significance. For the past century, the Communist Party of China has led China's reform and opening up, insisted on innovation-driven and sustainable development, and proposed a new system of international relations including the "Belt and Road Initiative". This remarkable plan can be said to be a new measure to promote China's development and the new spirit of cooperation for all mankind.
He also pointed out that with a global COVID-19 pandemic raging around the world, major international efforts such as the “Belt and Road Initiative” will help strengthen cooperation in responding to pandemic and other international challenges, such as financial crises, climate changes, the loss of global biodiversity and other international challenges.
He expressed that with the ongoing vaccination efforts worldwide, Thailand is gearing up towards the full re-opening of the country. At the same time, we are pursuing the Bio, Circular BCG and Green, or BCG, Economy Model as the path to build back a healthier, greener and more inclusive economy as the pandemic subsides, and to reinforce sustainability in our people-centered economic growth and development. While China will strengthen cooperation on green infrastructure, green energy and green finance, and improve the BRI International Green Development Coalition, the Green Investment Principles for the Belt and Road Development, and other multilateral cooperation platforms, which promote sustainable development, Thailand's BCG Model will also focus on integrating bioeconomy, circular economy, and green economy with advanced technologies and innovations throughout the supply chains to boost competitiveness, enhance resource efficiency, transform waste into value, and mitigate impacts on the environment.
In recent years, the cooperation between China and Jamaica under the framework of the “Belt and Road Initiative” has progressed smoothly. The “Belt and Road Initiative” meets the strategic development needs of the two countries with broad development prospects. The Ambassador of Jamaica to China H.E. Mr. Antonia Hugh said in his speech that no country in the world can ignore the “Belt and Road Initiative”. It not only covers countries along the "Silk Road Economic Belt" and the "21st Century Maritime Silk Road" and other developing countries, but also includes developed countries with advantages in technology, environmental protection, standards and other fields. All countries are willing to participate in the new globalization progress. At the same time, the globalization led by the “Belt and Road Initiative” is a win-win globalization based on cooperation principles and cooperation methods.
H.E. Mr. Antonia Hugh pointed out that Jamaica's investment environment is also attractive. In addition to the world's top beaches and other natural sceneries, its political stability, high degree of marketization, and geographical location make Jamaica an ideal passenger transfer and shipment hub. With advanced communication facilities and high policy transparency, the government encourages foreign capital to invest in Jamaica.
The Bahamas is one of the richest countries in the Caribbean. Its GDP per capita is after the United States and Canada in the Western Hemisphere. Tourism and financial services are also the most important sectors of its national economy, with an output value accounting for 90% of its GDP. H.E. Mr. Robert Sterling Quant strongly promoted the pillar industries of the Bahamas-tourism and finance in his speech. The Bahamas has become an important offshore financial center in the world.
He also stated that the Freeport is the most famous among recent investments in the Bahamas and is one of the largest ports in the entire Western Hemisphere. Built by Hutchison Whampoa Co., Ltd. of Hong Kong, China, the main business is repairing large yachts and calling at ports.
The Bahamas has a strategic geographical advantage. Although there is a 12-hour time difference with China, there are many pros and cons. The labor market is relatively active and does not levy personal income tax and other income tax. For individual investors, the Bahamas local government will have corresponding investment incentive policies. “At the same time, we are currently very interested in pairing some “Sister Cities” between Bahamas and China, just like Shanghai and Chicago, to cooperate in various fields including economy, tourism, and education.
For the Bahamas, the implementation of the United Nations "Transform Our World: 2030 Agenda" is not only an opportunity but also a challenge.
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) are committed to achieving 17 sustainable development goals. This is the common vision of mankind and the social contract reached between the leaders of the world and the people of all countries. Mr. Liu Zhenmin, the UN Deputy Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, said recently that although the COVID-19 pandemic has erased decades of development achievements, this global crisis can also become an important opportunity to promote the transformation of the international community. The decisions and actions taken in the next 18 months will determine whether the world can promote the recovery after the pandemic and complete the sustainable development goals on time.
