The Republic of Rwanda is located in the middle east of Africa. In recent years, the economy of Rwanda has been growing year by year. The national reconstruction has achieved initial success and the economy has surpassed the pre-war (1990) level. On August 1st, “Witness Friendship” Home and Abroad News Press 2017 Summer Junior Journalist Delegation visited the Rwandan Embassy in China and had an exclusive interview with the Rwandan Ambassador to China H.E. Mr. Charles Kayonga.

Ambassador Charles Kayonga and the President of Home and Abroad News Press Mrs. Wei Yan co-chaired the interview. The cultural counselor of the Rwandan embassy delivered a welcome speech. The junior journalists first watched a documentary film about Rwanda in the meeting room. The film showed the Rwanda’s lakes, mountains, beautiful sceneries and its unique culture as well as wild animals like giraffe, elephants, gorillas and birds in the mountains. Through this film, the junior journalists started to like this African country.
When starting the interview, a junior journalist asked: “Hello Mr. Ambassador, thank you very much for accepting our interview! China and Rwanda are far away from each other, and the two countries have their own unique cultures; therefore, the cultural exchange seems very important in the bilateral relations. As the Ambassador to China, how will you promote the communication and cooperation between China and Rwanda during your term here in Beijing?”
Ambassador Kayonga said that during my term of office as the ambassador to China, I have promoted the friendly relations between China and Rwanda. On March 17 this year, Rwandan President Paul Kagame made a state visit to China and held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The two heads of state agreed to take the implementation of the outcomes of the Johannesburg Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation as a starting point, actively promote the innovative cooperation model to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation in an all-round manner and enhance the strategic cooperation between the two countries. On March 22, 2016, invited by the Senate President of Rwanda, Bernard Makuza, and the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Donatille Mukabalisa, the Chairman of the Chinese NPC Standing Committee Mr. Zhang Dejiang paid an official visit to Rwanda and met with Rwandan President Paul Kagame in Kigali and held separate talks with Bernard Makuza and Donatille Mukabalisa respectively. They expressed that Rwanda has always been a firm supporter and participant in the friendly cooperation between China and Africa.
Ambassador Kayonga added that China and Rwanda are closely involved in cultural exchanges and the frequent exchanges of visits between the two countries are encouraged. Rwandan national troupe and various art troupes came to China for performances.
“Republic of Rwanda is in Eastern Africa, which is one of the least developed countries in the world according to the United Nations reports. We want to ask you about the education system in Rwanda? Are the students able to complete their study during their school time?” a junior journalist asked.
Ambassador Kayonga said that Rwanda attaches great importance to education by making focus investments into all-level education. It continually selects and hires excellent teachers all over the world to come to teach in Rwanda. Now primary and secondary primary school students have already used computers in their learning, and the government ensures that primary and secondary education is provided to all of its students.
“You have incredible diplomatic career success, which impressed us very much. We want to ask you: what are your interests in spare time? How do you educate your own child?”
“I enjoy swimming and traveling, play table tennis after work. I also like to read magazines, get more information about China and see what information can help Rwanda. I have three children, two boys studying in the United States and my daughter is 15 years old. We often learn about Chinese culture together, we all like China.”
Lastly, Ambassador Kayonga made a suggestion to all junior journalists: please remember three things: study hard, play hard and help others as much as you can.
On behalf of Home and Abroad News Press International Cultural Exchange Center, Mr. Wang Yinju presented a Tibetan Thangka to Ambassador Kayonga and looked forward to further cooperation with the international cultural exchange center so that both sides can make joint efforts to promote the cultural industries of the two countries.
After the interview, the junior journalists were pleased to enjoy the delicious food and drinks prepared by the Rwandan Embassy. A group photo and exchange of gifts made such wonderful time and unforgettable memories for junior journalists and the Rwandan diplomats.
